Feature Analysis: Trump’s Potential Crypto Tax Break Faces Major Hurdles

Speculation is rising over whether Donald Trump could push to eliminate capital gains tax on U.S. crypto projects, a move that could boost blockchain innovation. However, TD Cowen analysts warn it would face significant political and regulatory challenges. Given the IRS classifies crypto as property, removing the tax would require congressional approval and likely face opposition over revenue loss and tax evasion concerns. A Republican-led Congress may support reforms, but bipartisan backing is needed. Analysts suggest that instead of full exemption, Trump may explore alternatives like lower tax rates or deferrals for long-term holdings.

Trading Strategies and Ideas

  • Dow Jones Industrial Index: The Dow Jones ($DJI) is testing key resistance near 45,000, struggling to break past its all-time closing high of 45,014 from December 4. While the long-term uptrend remains intact, the recent hesitation suggests potential consolidation in the near term. Near-term technical outlook: slightly bearish.
  • Russell 2000 Index: The Russell 2000 (RUT) is hovering near its 50-day Simple Moving Average, which could signal a bullish shift if it closes above this level for the first time since the December FOMC meeting. A failure to break through would flip the near-term outlook to bearish. Near-term technical outlook: bullish, contingent on a close above the 50-day SMA.
